Teens of Excellence Prom Closet Program needs formalwear donations for Male and Female Teens

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- The Housing Authority of Fulton County (HAFC) and the Resident Advisory Board (RAB) want donations of formal wear and accessories for the fifth annual “Teens of Excellence” Prom Closet Program.

HAFC is seeking donations of gently used and clean prom/formal dresses and tuxedoes of all sizes for high school seniors graduating in May 2014. Donations of larger size formal wear are especially needed.

The program seeks to help single parents, grandparents and/or guardians on fixed incomes to provide prom wear without the disappointing choice of saying no to a teen about purchasing formalwear because of limited income.

The formal wear is provided to high school seniors, with priority given to Housing Authority of Fulton County residents. In 2013, more than 250 high school seniors in Fulton County received donated formal clothing to wear to their proms.

As in previous years, items needed for the 2014 Prom Closet include:

Designer Eugenia Vasiliadas and her daughter Barbara Vasiliadas Kavchok say they are inspired by "a wide range of sources, such as the subtle change of the seasons, the glamorous starlets of the 30s and 40s, the world-renowned masters of Haute Couture, the lost art of classic tailoring and, very often, the brides themselves."

Kavchok will attend the trunk show to help brides-to-be customize the dresses of their dreams. They can choose to have blue linings ("something blue") and hand painted monograms added to their gowns as well.

ROSWELL, Ga. -- When Iraq War veteran Alissa returned to her hometown of Fargo, N.D. after fighting overseas, she was met with some surprising reactions.

"Ever since I left the military three years ago, I had been getting quite a bit of harassment in my town from people disagreeing with the war," she said.

But when Alissa heard of a special event happening in Roswell for engaged military women, she hopped in her car and drove all the way to Georgia.

"For me to see a company reach out their arms so graciously to those who served and those who endured the separation to those serving is nothing less than amazing," she said.

A few times a year, the popular bridal shop Wedding Angels teams up with Brides Across America to give away free designer wedding gowns to fiancées with ties to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

ROSWELL, Ga. -- A popular Roswell bridal shop is preparing to provide free wedding gowns to military finacées.

Wedding Angels will give away the dresses from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19 and Wednesday, July 20.

To qualify, brides must be on active duty in the U.S. military or have a fiancé on active duty in Iraq or Afghanistan. All brides-to-be must show their military IDs, copies of deployment papers, orders or other proof.

The number of available gowns is limited, so brides are encouraged to arrive at Wedding Angels as soon as possible.

The gown giveaway event is co-sponsored by Brides Across America, a charitable organization focused on providing free wedding dresses to military brides who have not been able to plan and host their dream weddings.
