Weekend roadwork moves off the interstate

(WXIA) -- Weekends usually mean lots and lots of interstate traffic in metro Atlanta.

But this weekend, the weather will be gorgeous and much of the roadwork will move off the highways.

"We didn't really plan to avoid work on the interstates this weekend. It just turned out that the contractors didn't schedule any," said Georgia Department of Transportation Metro District Construction Engineer Shun Pringle. "We will likely be back out there next weekend though."

A few interstate projects are still in the works. On I-285, maintenance crews will close two rights lanes from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly to replace concrete slabs. Those closures will happen southbound from Cascade Road to Langford Parkway and northbound from Hollowell Parkway to South Cobb Drive.

The Ga. 400/I-85 Interchange Project will continue and may affect drivers in the Sidney Marcus Boulevard, Cheshire Bridge Road, Lenox Road and Buford Highway areas of Atlanta.

Pringle also warned drivers to watch out for crews cleaning drains and upgrading signs on parts of I-285, I-75 and I-20. These projects will force workers to close single lanes.

Interstate projects will still take place in several areas far outside the Perimeter:

Banks County
One left lane of I-85 north will be closed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily between Highway 441 and Martin Bridge Road so crews can replace a slab.

Coweta County
One left lane of I-85 north will have a rolling closure from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily between Highway 14 to Buford Drive for shoulder sweeping.

Forsyth County
One right lane of Ga. 400 south will have a rolling closure from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily between Highway 120 and I-85 for drain cleaning.

Gwinnett County
One left lane of I-985 north will have a rolling closure from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily between Highway 20 and Highway 60 for shoulder sweeping.

One left lane of I-85 south will have a rolling closure from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily between Highway 20 and Highway 14 for shoulder sweeping.

Hall County
One left lane of I-985 south will have a rolling closure from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily between Highway 60 and Highway 20 for shoulder sweeping.

The exit ramp from I-985 north to Friendship Road will be closed for work as well.

Newton County
One left lane of I-20 west will have a rolling closure from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily between John R. Williams Highway and Liberty Road for sweeping.
