How to get a free smoke detector | News

ATLANTA -- By law, every Georgia home is required to have a working smoke detector, but many metro Atlantans can't afford them.
If you can't afford a smoke detector, you can request one from your local fire department for free. First Alert, working with the 11Alive Help Desk, has donated 5,000 of them to insure that every homeowner who needs a smoke alarm gets one.
"If you have a local station down the street, you can reach out to them, or you can call your city or county office and ask for the local fire department," said Glenn Allen, spokesman for Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens.
If your fire department has a smoke detector available, they will come out and install it for you for free. If they do not have them, they will be sent the units for free.
Homeowners can also call Commissioner Hudgens' office at 800-656-2298.
They will double check with local fire officials. If one still isn't available, Allen said "We'll send the fire department a smoke alarm that has your name and address on it, and they will come and install it for you."
Additionally, he said anyone can ask their local fire department to come out and inspect or install their smoke alarm for free. They'll also help you replace the battery.
