North Fulton Hospital offering robotic spine surgery

ROSWELL, Ga. -- North Fulton Hospital is now offering a revolutionary, minimally invasive spine surgery.

The advanced procedure uses a Mazor robot to perform surgeries with small incisions, shorter hospital visits and faster recovery.

"We are very excited that North Fulton Hospital will be one of the first hospitals in the Atlanta area to have the Mazor robot and to be able to offer this kind of surgery to adults," hospital CEO Deborah Keel said in a statement. "This is an outstanding technology. The Mazor robot provides the potential for less pain and quicker recoveries."

The spinal surgery creates a virtual 3D environment to guide doctors through the procedure before they operate. This allows for greater accuracy than traditional surgeries, Keel said.

"The Mazor robot is great because it allows for pre-operative planning and can save time in the operating room," orthopedic surgeon Dr. Jason W. Velez said in a statement. "I'm very excited about being able to use the robot during surgeries on patients with spinal deformaties that might have been inoperable otherwise."
