Fulton County Health Services and the Healthy Heart Coalition celebrates American Heart Month

Fulton County Health Service and the Healthy Heart Coalition is supporting a range of activities in commemoration of American Heart Month this February. The Coalition’s American Heart Month activities will commence with a special proclamation at the February 6th Fulton County Board of Commissioners meeting. With the help of stakeholders, community leaders, medical experts, policy makers and grassroots organizations, the Coalition will also be supporting a range of healthy heart activities throughout the month of February.

The American Heart Association recommends we assess our risk factors for cardiovascular disease and work to keep them low. The sooner we begin reducing our risks, the longer and stronger our hearts will beat. In the spirit of American Heart Health Month, the American Heart Association encourages everyone to be aware of the following:

There are Signs and Symptoms of Poor Heart Health
Although some heart conditions are sudden and intense, most develop slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. See your doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms:

• Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back.
• Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach.
• Shortness of breath. May occur with or without chest discomfort.
• Other signs. These may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, or lightheadedness.

You Can Have a Healthy Heart!
By following these simple steps we can reduce our risk for heart disease, heart attack and stroke:

• Stop smoking
• Choose good nutrition
• Reduce blood cholesterol
• Lower high blood pressure
• Be physically active every day
• Aim for a healthy weight
• Manage diabetes
• Reduce stress
• Limit alcohol

American Heart Month will be the springboard to many other Coalition activities. Activities being implemented in 2013 include launching a new Healthy Hearts website, supporting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Million Hearts Initiative (www.millionhearts.hhs.gov) and advocating for heart healthy vending machine options in schools.
