AKA holding peace rally for middle school students

ATLANTA -- Members of metro Atlanta's chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will hold a peace rally and workshop for middle school students over the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday weekend.

The event will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Ivy Community Center in southwest Atlanta. It is part of the 40 Days of Peace project, which aims to spread service and kindness through the country.

The peace rally and workshop will aim to teach young people about Dr. King's mission, and to raise awareness of crime and crime prevention strategies. Law enforcement members will also give an interactive presentation to encourage children to stamp out gangs and bullying.

Middle school students from several metro Atlanta counties -- Cobb, Cherokee, Clayton, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall, Henry, Paulding and Rockdale -- are expected to participate.

Rick Case Bikes for Kids program enters 31st year

DULUTH, Ga. -- The Rick Case Automotive Group is once again collecting bicycles for needy children this holiday season.

Now in its 31st year, the Rick Case Bikes for Kids program has collected more than 100,000 bikes in three states.

"This program is a way to put smiles on thousands of children's faces," Rick Case said in a statement. "Our community really comes together to make sure the children in the area can have the best holiday season possible."

Atlanta-area residents can drop off bicycles in good condition at five car dealerships. The bikes will be distributed through local Boys & Girls Clubs.

ROSWELL, Ga. -- Roswell United Methodist Church is planning a Christmas concert extravaganza, complete with music, dancers and a nativity.

The Christmas programs will be held on Friday, Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 9 at 3 p.m. Tickets are free, but are necessary to reserve seating.

Guests are also invited to stroll through the RUMC Charis Gallery's newest exhibit, When Eternity Came to Earth, before or after the concerts.

ROSWELL, Ga. -- Nothing says Christmas in Roswell quite like the annual Lighting of the Historic Town Square.

This year's event will be held Saturday, Dec. 1. The fun begins at 5 p.m. with refreshments, choral performances and even a visit from Santa Claus himself.

Santa's Secret Gift Shop will open at 6 p.m. Children are invited to accompany Santa's elves to the shop and pick out the perfect gifts for their parents and friends.

The gift shop is located at the Roswell Adult Recreation Center on Grimes Bridge Road. A free shuttle will ferry shoppers between the shop and the Square.

Path2College scholarship coloring contest ends Sept. 30

ATLANTA -- Georgia children in Pre-K through 5th grade can now color their way to a college scholarship from the Path2College 529 Plan.

In honor of College Savings Month, the statewide college savings program is hosting a coloring contest with a $1,529 scholarship at stake.

To win the money, children must color a picture of Hootie the Wise Old Owl and complete a sentence: When I graduate, I'm going to be a ________.

River Eves ES kindergartners come together for movie night

ROSWELL, Ga. -- More than 110 River Eves Elementary School kindergarten students and their parents attended the second annual River Eves Education Foundation (REEF) Kindergarten Morning at the Movies on Aug. 25.

The fun family event was held at Studio Movie Grill in Alpharetta.

"Our second annual Studio Movie Grill event was a tremendous success," REEF president Jennifer Walley said in a statement. "We are proud to host a fun event for our newet Eagles, as well as meet our new parents and gather their feedback on the areas they feel are important at the school."

During Morning at the Movies, parents got to hear all about the school and its many recent advancements in technology and science.
