Santa Needs Your Help

Parents are out of work, jobs are scarce, and a record level of homes are in foreclosure. Even Santa Clause has been forced to tighten his belt. Hundreds of elves have been laid off during the 2011 calendar year and Santa doesn’t have enough toys for all the children.

Can you help?

Santa is seeking elves and Christmas angels to sponsor foster children and children in need this Christmas season. Sponsors will be asked to provide $75 worth of gifts to brighten a child’s Christmas morning. Each child will receive 2 to 3 articles of clothing and 2 to 3 gifts. If you’re a bargain shopper, you don’t even have to spend $75! Others may be interested in sponsoring an entire family. Options are available for all budgets. Santa needs your help to make sure all the children on the nice list are remembered this Christmas.

Mother Nature visits the Chattahoochee Nature Center’s Halloween Hikes

Mother Nature visits the Chattahoochee Nature Center’s Halloween Hikes

ROSWELL, Ga. -- If you visit any nature center in the U.S. this time of year they’re most likely having some sort of Halloween hike.  It’s a little known fact that these outdoor Halloween hikes started in Atlanta at the Chattahoochee Nature Center in 1986.

In 1986, Marietta resident Kristi Beckler was looking for something fun to do with her children that wasn’t too scary.  She and her husband Paul had been longtime volunteers at CNC.    Mrs. Beckler merged the two ideas, added educational elements and came up with the idea of Halloween Hikes.

Chattahoochee Nature Center’s Halloween Hikes is a chance for people to explore the trails at night where they’ll meet larger than life costumed creatures.  You’ll meet the Red Winged Blackbird, Grey Fox, Venus Fly Trap, Black Widow Spider and Mother Earth.

River Eves dads' breakfast draws crowd

River Eves dads' breakfast draws crowd

ROSWELL, Ga. -- On the eve of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, children and their fathers came together to eat, talk, laugh and enjoy each others' company at such an important time.

The PTA at River Eves Elementary School hosted its third annual Calling All Dads breakfast on Sept. 9. More than 70 fathers attended the event, making it the largest turnout to date.

"We are really pleased at the turnout and commitment of our fathers and male role models at our school -- and particularly the positive impact that will have on our students," said River Eves principal Neil Pinnock.

Preston Shirmeyer, River Eves dad and chair of the Calling All Dads program, agreed.

"It's really rewarding to see how much enjoyment the kids get just from having their dad with them at school for these activities," he said.
