Fulton County Health Services encourages residents to learn their status on National HIV Testing Day

ATLANTA -- The Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness will recognize National HIV Testing Day (NHTD) on Friday, June 27 by offering free HIV/STI testing and counseling at three locations.

The NHTD is an annual campaign to encourage all individuals to “Take the Test Take Control” in order to know their HIV status.  Knowing your status helps to keep you, your family and your community safe from sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV.

Free and confidential HIV/STI testing is available at the following locations:

Supper Club fundraiser held at 5 Seasons Brewery

5 Seasons Brewery invites the community to help them kick off the summer patio season while raising money for the Atlanta Community Food Bank. They will host the Food Bank’s regular Supper Club fundraiser on June 11 at all three locations. This is a special edition of Supper Club with the theme “Patio Perfect Dining” highlighting great restaurant patios in Atlanta.

Eat dinner at one of the three 5 Seasons Brewery locations on Tuesday, June 11 and 20 percent of your tab will be donated to support the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

Ashley is a wonderful person who goes above and beyond the classroom as a teacher to truly connect with her kids and make their lives better. She is always putting her students first, and worries about herself last.

Thanks to a tip from her co-worker Debra, 11Alive and Mimosa Salon Spa were able to give Ashley a special gift.

ATLANTA -- Several Monkey Joe's locations in Georgia will host an event to raise money for Tripp Halstead's family.

Jump for Tripp will be held all day on Sunday, May 19. Ten percent of sales will benefit the family of the 2 year old, who was hit by a falling tree branch at his daycare center last October.

Fulton County Cooperative Extension participates in Pizza Farm 2013

How do you expose urban youth to Georgia’s agriculture? You open a Pizza Farm!

The Cooperative Extension Metro Collaborative of Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Cobb and Clayton counties have invited 4th and 5th grade students to visit Pizza Farm 2013 on May 8 and 9, 2013 at the State Farmers Market Exhibit Hall located in Forest Park, GA. Attendees will learn how dairy, vegetables, grains and meats come together to make the perfect pizza, as well as about good health and nutrition. 

“We are excited about the Pizza Farm!” states Menia Chester, Director of Fulton County Cooperative Extension. “Many children think their food comes from the grocery store.  The Pizza Farm will teach them that every pizza starts at the farm.”

Exhibits on the origins of pizza ingredients will be presented in a circuit of stations set up around the State Farmers Market Exhibit Hall.

ATLANTA -- This year's Sweep the Hooch event is expected to be the biggest one yet.

The annual Chattahoochee River clean-up to slated to attract nearly 600 volunteers at a number of locations along the water.

Last year, Sweep the Hooch participants gathered up nearly four tons of trash.

"This is the kind of hands-on work that Chattahoochee Riverkeeper and our partners do that reaffirms our commitment to keeping our river clean," Chattahoochee Riverkeeper executive director Sally Bethea said in a statement. "We'll have volunteers paddling the river, wading in the water and combing the shoreline for trash."

Clean-up locations along the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area run from Buford Dam to Paces Mill.

Historic Roswell 10 Miler & 5K

Historic Roswell 10 Miler & 5K

ROSWELL, Ga. -- The Historic Roswell 10 Miler & 5K will be off and running on Saturday, Apr. 13.

Registration is currently open for both races, which will be held on historic Canton Street in the heart of downtown Roswell.

Both races begin at 7 a.m. and wind through the streets of Roswell. Race participation includes a post-event party with music, food and even a restorative yoga class courtesy of lululemon.

The cost is $30 for the 5K; the 10 miler is $60 through Apr. 1 and $70 after that. All finishers will receive performance T-shirts; those who run the 10 miler will also get commemorative race medals.

Proceeds from both the 10 miler and 5K benefit Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
