ATLANTA, GA -- Did you know that pneumonia & diarrhea are the two leading causes of death in children under the age of 5, accounting for 1/3 of childhood deaths worldwide? According to the United Nations Foundation, over 1.5 million children globally die annually from preventable childhood diseases such as polio, and measles due to lack of access to the life saving vaccinations. Statistics show that one child dies every 20 seconds from a disease that could easily be prevented through immunizations.

April 21st-28th, 2012 celebrates World Immunization Week, which aims to raise global awareness on the disparities of global health and promote the importance of keeping children healthy by providing families in marginalized countries with increased access to vaccination programs.

The North Fulton County chapter of the national mother’s support group, Mocha Moms, Inc., has joined forces with the United Nations Foundation’s Shot@Life campaign to support the cause; raising awareness through fundraising efforts, social media and community service, as part of the non-profit’s national initiative. The North Fulton Mocha Moms, Inc. (NFMM)  launched their kickoff fundraiser- Shot@Art picnic, on April 22nd, 2012 at the scenic Morgan Falls Overlook Park in Sandy Springs, GA.

NFMM members took to celebrating kids health, and giving them a shot at more “firsts” with food, fun and art during this free community event. The North Fulton Mocha “minis” used their talents and creativity to paint in honor of saving the lives of other children who do not receive basic immunization services that, contrarily, are readily available to kids in the United States.

In continuation of support for World Immunization Week, The North Fulton chapter of Mocha Moms, Inc. along with other local metro Atlanta chapters of the organization, joined hundreds of other families to celebrate the Shot@Life campaign launch held at the Georgia Aquarium on Thursday, April 26th, 2012. The event was held in the world-renowned aquarium’s Ocean’s Ballroom, where guests enjoyed fun-filled and informative hands-on, interactive stations.  Each “traveler” received a “passport” that lead them to destinations around the room where they learned about ways to help 1.5 million children become vaccinated by donating, spreading the word, and advocating. Families were able to share their messages of support “on the spot”  via Facebook and video, expressing their personalized platforms for all children to have a “shot at” reaching important childhood milestones.

Attendees also had an opportunity to sign a petition asking for national support from Congress, as well as participate in a ‘tweet’ party to Georgia state senator Saxby Chambliss, thanking him for being a major supporter of global vaccination programs.

According to Shot@Life.org, children in only 10 countries- China, Uganda, Chad, Ehtiopia, Pakistan, India, Kenya, Indonesia, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo-make up 75% of unvaccinated children.  Yet and still, the issue of global vaccination disparities effects us all. The United Nations Foundation’s motto, “germs don’t need a passport”- brings to surface the notion that, not only do vaccinations help keep children healthy in other countries, they also prevent the potential spread of global outbreaks. With the help of partners like Mocha Moms, Inc., and other advocates in the community, The United Nations Foundation will be able to reach their goal of eliminating diseases such as measles, and saving 2.5 million children annually from other preventable diseases through life-saving immunizations.
