Popular puppet series returns to Roswell this summer

ROSWELL, Ga. -- The Roswell Summer Puppet Series is back for 2011.

Now in its 14th season, the Roswell Summer Puppet Series offers nationally renowned puppeteers bringing all varieties of puppets and marionettes to the stage for a collection of whimsical and captivating performances.

Tickets are now available online for the first time; they may be purchased on the Roswell Summer Puppet Series website and are also available at the door 30 minutes prior to show time.

All performances take place at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center (950 Forest Street, 30075).

The 2011 line-up includes:

* Monday, June 6 to Saturday, June 11
"The Fairy Circus," presented by Tanglewood Marionettes
This production is a showcase for turn-of-the-century trick puppetry. The puppets will dance, play instruments, juggle, contort, transform and fly through the air with the greatest of ease, all to popular music from famous composers.

* Monday, June 13 to Saturday, June 18
"The Dragon King," presented by Tanglewood Marionettes
This show is an underwater fantasy based on Chinese folklore, full of colorful sea creatures and visual splendor. The heartwarming tale will thrill young and old alike.

* Monday, June 20 to Saturday, June 25
"The Big Bad Little Red Pig Show," presented by "That Puppet Guy" Lee Bryan
In this twisted tangle of tales, three little pigs and Little Red Riding Hood have been cleverly "squished" together with just one Big Bad Wolf to share in all the hilarious fun.

* Monday, June 27 to Saturday, July 2
"Peter & the Wolf" and "The Frog Prince," presented by Frisch Marionettes
"Peter & the Wolf" is performed to Sergei Prokofiev's beautiful musical story, while "The Frog Prince" is set to the lively music of Dimitre Kabalevesky. These are unusual puppet shows in which the marionettes share the stage with the puppeteers.

* Monday, July 4 to Saturday, July 9
"The Magic Fish," presented by the Roz Puppets
When a fisherman catches a large green fish in his net, he begins a crazy journey that involves a magic fish, three wishes and a wife who wants more. Will they live happily ever after? Find out in this whale of a tale.

* Monday, July 11 to Saturday, July 16
"The Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow," presented by Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers
A bumbling headless horseman, his wise-cracking horse, the meat head Brom Bones, the lovely Katrina, her rich father and lovable Ichabod Crane all come together for this delightful adaptation featuring 20 handmade mouth and rod puppets, plus a shadow puppet. "Sleepy Hollow" is recommended for children ages five and up.

* Monday, July 18 to Saturday, July 23
"Pinocchio," presented by National Marionette Theatre
Follow Pinocchio as he goes on a series of adventures and realizes that only by being truthful, selfless and kind to others will he achieve his dream of becoming a real live boy. This show is recommended for children ages four and up.

Show times are 10 a.m. every day, with additional shows at 1 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays. The cost is $4 for children (ages two to 12) and $5 for adults; children may also purchase puppet-making kits tailored to each show for an additional $4.
