'Once Upon a Mattress' Coming to Holy Innocents' Episcopal School

Take an unlikely princess in a fictional, medieval kingdom, Princess Winnifred the Woebegone. Add her bride-seeking suitor, Prince Dauntless the Drab. Toss in some witty writing and a delightful score that won the original show a Tony nomination for Best Musical, and you have Once Upon a Mattress.

The beloved, musical adaptation of  Hans Christian Andersen's "The Princess and the Pea" will be presented by Holy Innocents' Episcopal School's award-winning middle- and upper-school players on Nov. 8, 9 and 10 at 7 p.m. in the Holy Innocents' Fine Arts Building at 805 Mt. Vernon Hwy. N.W. in Sandy Springs.   Once Upon a Mattress, a rollicking spin on the familiar classic fairytale, debuted in 1959. Princess Winnifred (whose nickname is "Fred") is unkempt, no traditional match for Prince Dauntless. And making matters worse, Dauntless' mother, the domineering Queen Aggravain, has prevents every matrimonial candidate from succeeding at royal matrimony by putting her to impossible tests. HIES' Friday night performance of the charming farce will feature a "Talk Back" session immediately following the performance for actors, crew and audience, says Fine Arts Assistant Prather Rehm. Attending will be Brandt Blocker, Artistic Director of the Atlanta Lyric Theatre, and DayRon Miles, Director of Community Engagement and Casting Associate for the Alliance Theatre—offering critiques of the performance and talking about their involvement in local Atlanta theatre.     Tickets will be on sale Nov. 5—7 from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. outside Porter Dining Hall at the Upper School. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults.
